Abstract
Throughout the struggle against enforcement of new medical system as the separation of pharmacy and clinic, the role of Korean Medical Association (KMA) has changed as a powerful political body from a friendly society of medical doctors or a party of government circles which followed the health policies of government. Now KM A faces strong pressure of reform from inside and outside.

Major issues of reform are as below; democratic representative system such as a direct election of the president and representation of a board of representatives, activation of expert committees, being a professional group with morals, specialized and political knowledge, and so on. KMA is working for reform especially in change of its constitutions.

The authors reviewed the organization of KMA such as legal status within medical laws, a board of representatives and the election of officials, an executive and practical structure, its relationship with branches, chapters and the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences, and its financial affairs, and sought alternative and better ways to reform it
